Communication in a Mask

With many children returning to in-person school, we've put together  these tips for caregivers and teachers supporting kids' successful communication when masked. These ideas could be practiced at home while wearing a mask in short, low-stress family activities or role plays (e.g., playing a board game together). A PDF version can be downloaded here. Here are some examples of exaggerated eye movements for emotional facial expressions paired with appropriate gestures. These help illustrate more plainly how someone is feeling so children can readily understand.
